DINNERS ON A DIME: Real Southern Bar-B-Que

ATHENS, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features the best in local BBQ. Every Tuesday Where U Live chooses four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal for a price that’s economically feasible in today’s economy.

According to some, Jim and Nick’s BBQ is typical chain barbecue but according to others, it’s the best in town. The restaurant serves up the best fried catfish and isn’t too shabby when it comes to the fixings. Guests rave about their cornbread cheese muffins, salads and baked potatoes. Although the restaurant is popular for BBQ, they host a weekly Taco Night on Tuesdays. The restaurant is located at 1103 Old Peachtree Road in Suwanee.

Jot Em Down BBQ and Store is popular with the locals and UGA students, alike. The residents boasts that they do BBQ “the way it’s s’posed to be”.

DULUTH, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features local breakfast eats. Every Tuesday Where U Live chooses four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal, under $20.

The Rexall Grill is a crowd pleaser. This restaurant is casual and most visitors come back for more. Rexall Grill serves southern food and many say it takes like “home cooked food”. The restaurant opens, pretty, early at 5:30 a.m. and they only accept cash, so be sure to have it. Come visit the restaurant at 3165 Buford Highway in Duluth.

This restaurant is described as offering “everything you could possibly want 24 hours a day”. The Georgia Diner is a classic, “greasy spoon” diner, located in Lawrenceville, which offers classic dinner breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most of the offerings are under $10 and they even use real eggs.

Last week my son and I went on our monthly date night and this time we popped into a new place called, Genghis Grill which is located at Mall of Georgia. I try to show my son how to treat a lady, so we hang out and try  new places to eat and we both agreed on this new restaurant that we had been eyeing for awhile now. Genghis Grill opened a few months ago after NY Pizza closed earlier this year.

We walked in and liked the atmosphere, and then we heard a bong. When your food is ready, they hit the bong to let you know. My son loved it; I was startled. In the rear of the restaurant you load up red bowls with protein (the meat of your choice), seasonings, veggies and sauces. First, load up your bowl with protein items that include chicken, ham, steak, pork, shrimp and more. Next, add seasonings. They offer cajun, cayenne, red pepper, ginger and so on. Then, choose your veggies, which range from corn, bamboo shoots, bok choy, cabbage and more.

Happy indeed: Half-price Frappuccinos during Starbucks Happy Hour

ATLANTA -- Happy Friday! Celebrate the start of the weekend with a half-price however-you-want-it Frappuccino from Starbucks.

On May 6, participating Starbucks stores will hold the first Frappuccino Happy Hour from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. All flavors and sizes of the popular blended coffee drink are half-price during Happy Hour.

Starbucks is also bringing back two coconut drinks for summer.

The Mocha Coconut Frappuccino is a signature flavor in the chain's Hawaii stores.

BUFORD, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features local Cinco de Mayo eats. Every Tuesday Where U Live will choose four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal, under $20.

Cheeky’s, the Birthplace of the Beer Table, will be offering live music all day. At their Suwanee and Cumming locations, Cheeky’s will have $2 Tecate, $12 buckets of Dos Equis and Sol beers. The restaurant offers custom tacos, a list of salsas and a selection of sandwiches; entrees don’t exceed $15 and the restaurant is located at 1039 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Suwannee and 410 Peachtree Parkway in Cumming.

Chonas Mexican Grill in Lawrenceville will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with their regular specials. Chonas offers a long list of imported and domestic beers; they also offer classic Margaritas in, both, glasses and pitchers.

BUFORD, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features favorite affordable, neighborhoods eats. Every Tuesday Where U Live will choose four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal, under $20.

Called Atlanta’s Best Kept Secret by Zagat, Little Szechuan in Doraville could easily be the best Chinese in Atlanta. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and all menu items are priced under $10. Lunches are served with steamed rice and soup and brown rice can be substituted for $1 extra. The restaurant is open seven days a week and opens for lunch and dinner. Little Szechuan is located on 5091-C Buford Highway.

Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ, a southern restaurant with shops all over the city, hosts Taco Tuesday, every Tuesday. Tacos are $2.49 each; the tacos featured are the Bar-B-Q Pork Taco, Bar-B-Q Chicken Taco, Southern Fried Chicken Taco, Beef Brisket Taco and the Fried Catfish Taco.

In today’s economy, it’s important to find companionship which, in our opinion, is the cheapest form of entertainment. However, it’s the springtime, and people like to get out every now and then. So, check out these suggestions for fun under $15.

If your date is a romantic, Athens-Clarke County Greenways and Riverside Parks are hosting a Full Moon Hike. This guided hike will be lighted by the full moon, which occurs on April 26. The hike begins at 8:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m. Athens residents will be admitted for a $2 fee, all non-residents will be charged $5.
