RaceTrac hiring for Free Coffee Week

ATLANTA -- RaceTrac is hiring more than 100 temporary employees for the holidays.

The Cobb County-based chain of gas stations will hire two extra people at 66 Georgia locations to help promote Free Coffee Week.

Employees will hold signs from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Dec. 17-21. Sign holders must be at least 18 years old and clean cut.

Shop with a Jock takes kids on Falcons shopping spree

ATLANTA -- Forty kids from the Odyssey Villas apartments in Vine City get a chance to go on a shopping spree this week with some of their football heroes.

The Shop with a Jock program pairs Atlanta Falcons players, including tight end Tony Gonzalez and wide receiver Julio Jones, with disadvantaged children for a Christmas shopping trip to Walmart.

The Walmart on Lawrenceville Suwanee Road in Suwanee has agreed to host the Shop with a Jock kids at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Participating children are selected through Odyssey Villas' Action Ministries Atlanta program.

County calendars go on sale this month

County calendars go on sale this month

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- The 2013 Hall County Citizens Annual Report and calendar will go on sale in mid-December.

Copies of the report and calendar will be available at county buildings. They can also be purchased at hallcounty.org.

The county government produces the calendar and report every year to keep with its promise of creating an open government.

Sam's Club offering free diabetes screenings

ATLANTA -- Several Sam's Club Pharmacy locations throughout metro Atlanta will offer free diabetes and vision screenings this weekend.

The screenings will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and are valued at more than $150. They include glucose, A1C, vision, blood pressure and BMI tests.

"Knowing the links between risk factors, choices and solutions prepares our members to better manage or even prevent diabetes," Sam's Club Health and Wellness senior VP Jill Turner-Mitchael said in a statement.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed every year. If this trend continues, one out of every three U.S. adults will have diabetes by 2050.

Diabetes is also the leading cause of new cases of blindness in U.S. adults, according to the CDC.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- There is still time for Chestnut Mountain Creative School of Inquiry students and parents to order their spirit wear.

The T-shirts come in two colors and feature the charter school's new logo. They are $10 each.

To place an order, fill out the official form and return it and cash or a check to the school no later than Friday, Aug. 24.

All proceeds from the spirit wear sale benefit the CMCSI PTO.

Georgia resumes annual Back-to-School tax free holiday

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia is offering parents a tax holiday on back-to-school goods for the first time since 2009.

The state will temporarily suspend its collection of the sales tax on Aug. 10-11 for general school supplies, some clothing and computers and computer accessories.
