Commission seeks input on redistricting maps

Hall County residents will have a chance to ask questions and give input about proposed changes to Commission district maps from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Courthouse Annex, 116 Spring St. SE, Gainesville. See the proposed maps online.

“This is an important decision that is made only once a decade. I want to make sure that if people want to comment on the maps, they have the opportunity to do that,” said District 4 Commissioner Ashley Bell, who initiated the public meeting.

The 2010 Census results prompted a shift in the maps to equalize the population in each of the four districts. There are four areas where map changes are being proposed:

  1. The section of Chicopee election precinct east of Memorial Park Drive moves from District 2 to District 4.
  2. The Morgan II election precinct moves from District 1 to District 2.
  3. The section of Agricultural Center election precinct north of Poplar Springs Road and west of Candler Road moves from District 1 to District 4.
  4. The portions of Agricultural Center and Candler election precincts east of Candler Road moves from District 1 to District 3.

Once the Board of Commissioners adopts a redistricting plan, it will be presented to the Legislative Delegation of the state General Assembly with recommendation for approval, according to Interim Elections Director Charlotte Sosebee. The Legislative Delegation will publish its approved plan through the legal organ of Hall County. The plan then will be submitted by the County Attorney to the U.S. Department of Justice for preclearance under Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act.
