HALL: Sheriff looking for cattle rustler
News

HALL COUNTY, Ga. -- It isn't often that police go to a farm to cover a crime. Hall County Sheriff investigators were called to a farm on Holly Springs Road to investigate a cattle theft. Deputies were told that 30 head of cattle were stolen in October.

Investigators said the owner of the cattle, Wayne Wright of Jefferson, moved the cattle into a holding pen on the night of Oct. 13. Wright was going to move the cattle to another property the next day. When Wright went back to the farm on Oct. 14, 15 cows and 15 calves were gone.

"At first I thought they might have got out," Wright said. "I said 'No way they could have got out,' and I looked around, and they were gone."

Hall County investigators said the cows and calves are mixed colors and some of them are branded with the letters "TW" on the hip. They are valued at a total of $21,500.

The farm Wright kept his cattle on is one of many along Holly Springs Road in Gillsville, just east of Gainesville. Wright said he thinks the economy is the reason someone stole his cattle. He said whoever stole them probably tried to sell them at market or to an auction house.

"We called and put the word out," he said. "We heard nothing."

Wright said he's given up hope he'll get the cattle back and lacks words for the rustler who stole them.

"I don't know what to say other than I'd like to invite him to church," he said.

Hall County investigators are asking anyone with information about the theft to contact them at 770-531-6879.
