Rain could cancel road projects for the weekend

(WXIA) -- The threat of rain this weekend could provide some welcome relief for Atlanta-area drivers.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has already postponed a handful of road projects, thanks to the weather.

WEATHER | 11Alive meteorologist Tracy Humphrey has your weekend forecast

Resurfacing on Interstate 20 in Rockdale and Newton counties, and concrete replacement on the west side of I-285 have been canceled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

GDOT said it plans to move ahead with scheduled resurfacing on I-20 between Douglasville and Villa Rica, as it is very close to finishing the work -- well ahead of its projected November completion date. However, rain may briefly halt crews.

If the project continues, lanes in both directions will be closed between Liberty and Bill Arp roads from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Additional weekend roadwork includes:

Atlanta Airport
* Airport crews will work on lights in the 5th runway tunnel on I-285, which may results in sporadic lane closures.

Cobb/Fulton counties
* Left lanes in both directions of I-285 will be closed between Powers Ferry Road and I-75 from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday for sign work.

Downtown Atlanta
* Westbound I-20 exit ramps to Flat Shoals Road, Glenwood Avenue, Capitol Avenue and Windsor Street will be closed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly for restriping.

Fulton County
* One right northbound lane of Ga. 400 will be closed between Sidney Marcus Boulevard and Lenox Road from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Rolling closures for overnight sweeping will take place on I-575 in Cherokee County; I-85 in Coweta County; Ga. 400 in Forsyth and north Fulton counties; I-85 in Gwinnett County; I-985 in Hall County; I-75 in Henry, Fulton, Cobb and Cherokee counties; and I-20 in Newton County.

Weekend events that may impact traffic include the Braves v. Phillies series at Turner Field; Friday's The Fray concert at Chastain Park Amphitheatre; Friday's KISS and Def Leppard concert at Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood; and Saturday's BB&T Atlanta Open at Atlantic Station.
